The current SU Representation System isn't working; the Elected Officers are not visible or accessible as they are caught up with too many meetings, Class Rep positions are unfilled, and Union Council rarely reaches quorum.

We've tried fixing this for years. New Training. Better Communication. Different structures. Nothing works. Because the system itself is the problem and we want your support to change it!

For it to change, we needed to hold a referendum of the MIC Student Body. Students had the opportunity to either vote 'yes' to approve the changes or vote 'no' to keep the current system.

The Timeline:

The Executive Committee debated the motion and called a referendum on 29.01.2026.

Union Council met on 04.02.2026 to debate the motion.

The referendum for students to vote on the changes was held on Thursday, 12 Feb 2026.

The student body voted Yes to approve the changes.

The new Representation System will come into effect in June 2026, with elections to fill the new roles to be held in March 2026.

The Changes:

The proposed new system is as follows:

  • Advocacy Officers
  • Student Community Organisers
  • Learning Reps
  • Student Confidence Conference
  • Democratic Procedures Committee
  • Online Petition & Idea Platform

Click the following for more detailed information on the proposed changes;

How the roles work together:

  • Advocacy Roles (strategic/senior level): Champion campaigns and issues at An Chomhairle Acadúil (Academic Council), lobby college leadership, hold institution accountable, attend An tÚdarás Rialaithe (Governing Authority)
  • Community Organisers (grassroots level): Conduct listening sessions, identify and raise student priorities, kick-start action squads
  • Learning Reps (operational/faculty level): Represent student voice on academic boards, provide evidence and expertise from current student experience

This creates a pyramid of student voice: grassroots energy flows upward through trained representatives to strategic decision-makers, whilst staying grounded in real student experiences.
