What is a Class Representative?
A Class Rep is a student who gives their time and efforts to represent the views of their class to MISU and MIC.
They are elected by their classmates and remain within the role for the full duration of the academic year.
Class Reps play an integral role in representing students, helping students overcome problems and maintaining the quality of courses in MIC.
What does a Class Rep do?
Class reps help MISU to make your time at MIC memorable and fun.
With over 40 courses on offer at MIC and a breakdown of hundreds of classes, it would be impossible for the Executive Committee to meet all of these classes on a regular basis. This is where Class Reps are the key. Class Reps link the MIC student body with MISU and work with us to ensure your class's voice is being heard.
If your class is having any issues, wants to give feedback or has any suggestions for MISU, your Class Rep can take all of this onboard and report back to us.
The Key Responsibilites of a Class Rep
- All the class reps in MIC sit on a meeting with select members of the Executive Committee called Union Council (UC). These meetings take place every two weeks and are an opportunity for class reps to advocate on behalf on their class.
- All class reps have voting power at Union Council and can vote on any motions that are carried, and through Union Council, they can also hold the Executive Committee accountable and can task the officers with projects or issues to follow-up on.
- Class reps also attend one meeting per semester with MIC faculty staff as part of the Student Learning and Partnership Dialogue Charter. These meetings provide class reps with an opportunity to speak with faculty staff directly regarding student concerns, issues or recommendations relating to academic life and the overall student experience in MIC.
- Class reps introduce themselves to their class, stay connected with their class, actively seek feedback from their class and work to keep both their classmates and themselves informed on anything that is happening in MIC that may be applicable to them.
What are the Time Commitments?
Thinking of becoming a Class Rep but not sure if you'll have the time? We've broken down the time commitments involved with the role to give you an overview of what you can expect.
| Union Council (UC) Meetings |
- Union Council takes place every two weeks for a minimum of 6 meeting per academic semester or 12 per academic year.
- Union Council meetings can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

| Union General Meetings (UGM's) |
- There are 2 Union General Meetings per academic semester for a total of 4 meeting each academic year.
- The first meeting of each semester is held by week 3 with the second meeting held by week 12.

| Annual General Meeting (AGM) |
- There is 1 Annual General Meeting per academic year.
- This is held by week 12 of semester 2 and can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

| Class Rep Training |
- Class Rep Training is majority done through a self-guided Moodle Module.
- This can be done at your own pace however must be completed within 2 weeks of being successfully elected to the role.

| Sub-Committees of Union Council |
- Standing Sub-Committees of Union Council are required to meet at least two times per semester however flexibility is required in terms of the possibility for additional meetings.
- These meetings can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

| Staff-Student Forums |
- Staff-Student Forums take place each semester in line with the Student Learning and Partnership Dialogue Charter. MISU expects our class reps to utilise these forums to meet with faculty staff.
- These meetings can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

- We expect our class reps to link in with their classes on a weekly or fortnightly basis to keep both themselves and their classes informed and in preparation for UC Meetings.
- There is no set time requirement for this and is based on your own willingness and availability.

- MISU aims to host a number of networking events for our class reps over the academic year.
- These events could be anything from 1 hour after UC to an evening out and are to be confirmed.
- Attendance at any events will be based on your own availability.

Student Learning and Partnership Dialogue Charter
Established during the 2019/20 Academic Year, the Student Learning and Partnership Dialogue Charter is an agreement between MISU and MIC which aims to outline the commitments, expectations, responsibilities, and underpinning dialogue processes between the College and its students. The overarching objective of this pioneering new charter is to facilitate student success.
From this charter, Staff Student Fora have been established for the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and School of Education (Post-Primary) in MIC Thurles. These fora each take place once per academic semester and provide an opportunity for faculty staff to hear firsthand from respective class reps regarding student concerns, issues or recommendations relating to their academic life and overall student experience in MIC.
