The Students’ Union functions as an autonomous entity tasked with representing its members and advocating for their rights within MIC, and beyond. Each student becomes a member of the Students’ Union upon enrollment at MIC, entitling them to access all Union services. These services encompass welfare and education advice, as well as amenities like the Students’ Union Shop. Additionally, the Students’ Union serves as the voice of students on college committees and collaborates with the college to address student concerns. Student Union officers advocate for students' interests from orientation to graduation.
The Student Officer team comprises, three full-time officers and several part-time officers, who are elected annually by the students of MIC. They are responsible for providing information and guidance on various aspects of student life, including academic matters, accommodation, and equality issues.

The full-time officers are exactly as they say - full-time roles with hours of work Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm (mainly). As the role is for the full 2024/25 Academic Year, if you plan on running for a full-time officer position and you will not be finished your studies, you will need to take a Leave of Absence (Year out/Sabbatical) from your course. You will also need to ensure that you fulfill all legal requirments to work in Ireland when taking up office, as you will become an employee of MISU.
Place of work is primarily in the MISU Office on the Limerick campus, however, the positions of Vice-President Academic & Vice-President Student Experience & Wellbeing will alternate days in the MISU Office on the Thurles campus.

The following positions on the full-time officer team are up for election on Thursday, 7th March. Please take a look at the candidates for each position, read their manifestos and see what they aim to do for you if elected by you on Thursday.
President:
The President serves as the main representative and spokesperson for MISU, overseeing the Student Officer Team. Accountable to the student body, the President ensures the representation of MISU's members, implementation of MISU Policy, adherence to Referenda decisions, and coordination of MISU Campaigns. All Student Officers report to the President, who is responsible for their training, formulating their annual plan of work (for Union Council approval), and ensuring each officer provides regular updates to the Student body through written reports for Union General Meetings and the Annual General Meeting. Additionally, the President participates in various College committees, especially those addressing student concerns, and provides updates on their work to the Student Officer Team and Union Council. The President is your champion & is dedicated to making your student experience the best it can be!
Vice-President Academic (Deputy President):
The Vice-President Academic is the go-to person for students in need of academic support. They also step in for the President in their absence. Their role involves managing the Class Rep system, including organising Class Rep Elections, overseeing Union Council Meetings, and ensuring effective communication with Class Reps. In addition, the Vice-President Academic acts as a crucial link between students and faculty management and staff. They are responsible for promoting, developing, and implementing Union Policy, ensuring that it aligns with the academic needs and concerns of the student body. This role requires a focus on fostering positive relationships and effective communication channels between the student body and relevant academic authorities.

Vice-President Student Experience & Wellbeing:
The Vice-President Student Experience & Wellbeing is your go-to person for all things related to student wellbeing and experience. They take the lead in supporting students on a range of issues, from general welfare and finance to accommodation, mental wellbeing, and sexual wellbeing. Ensuring fairness and equality, the VP Student Experience & Wellbeing advocates for the well-being of students and provides a helping hand for any well-being concerns. They make sure that every student community is equally represented across the Student Officer Team. To stay ahead of the game, they collect data to identify emerging trends or issues among the student body. Additionally, the VP oversees and organises campaigns focused on student wellbeing, and when it comes to grievances related to wellbeing, they're there to lend an ear and offer support.

Postgraduate Officer:
The Postgraduate Officer supports the Full-time Officers in providing the MISU Representational Services to Postgraduate students.
They are responsible for determining and presenting the needs of all postgraduate students to the Executive Committee and Union Council, chairing the MISU Postgraduate Committee, liaising with all postgraduate class representatives and the Postgrad Students Union in the University of Limerick, where they are a full member, regarding their activities and those of the Union.
They are also responsible for organising the Postgraduate Lunchtime Presentation series on a monthly basis.
The Postgraduate Officer is a paid Part-time Officership and they are required to work 10 hours per week during the academic term and be available to meet with students during these hours. You will also need to ensure that you fulfill all legal requirements to work in Ireland when taking up office, as you will become an employee of MISU.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer (EDI):
The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer supports the Full-time Officers in ensuring the fair and equal representation of all student groups within MISU. They work with the Full-time Officers to deliver an appropriate programme of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion events and campaigns run by MISU.They are responsible for ensuring that MISU services are accessible to all students and attend training specific to the officership as required. The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer also organises an ‘international culture week’ of events in order to entertain, educate and inform the student membership and the general public
Welfare Officer:
The Welfare Officer supports the Full-time Officers in advocating for students' welfare in various aspects. They focus on broad concerns such as accommodation, safety, and overall wellbeing. Working alongside the Full-time officers, the Welfare Officer organises campaigns when needed, addressing issues important and relevant to the student community. To ensure effectiveness in their role, the Welfare Officer attends relevant training sessions specific to their officership. They also contribute to preparing the welfare section of Students' Union publications and communications, ensuring that students are well-informed about relevant welfare matters. This role plays a vital part in fostering a supportive and caring environment for the student body.
Thurles Officer:
The Thurles Officer works with Full-time Officers to deliver Representational services specifically for the Thurles campus at MISU. This role entails identifying and presenting the unique needs of Thurles Campus students to the President, Student Officer Team, and Union Council. As a paid Part-time Officership, the Thurles Officer commits 8 hours per week during the academic term. Their designated workspace is on the Thurles Campus, ensuring accessibility for student meetings and engagement during these hours. This officer plays a key role in ensuring that the voices and concerns of Thurles Campus students are effectively communicated and addressed within the broader work of MISU. You will also need to ensure that you fulfill all legal requirements to work in Ireland when taking up office, as you will become an employee of MISU.

Student Activities Officer (Thurles):
The Student Activities Officer (Thurles Campus) supports the Full-time Officers in providing a diverse programme of on-campus activities for students on the Thurles campus. They are the first point of contact for students who are interested in and part of Clubs & Societies on the Thurles campus. They alternate chairing of Clubs & Societies Council with the Student Activities Officer (Limerick Campus) and sit on the Board of Irish College Societies as student representatives.

As no nominations were received for the following positions by 2pm on Tuesday, 5th March, they will not appear on the ballot on Thursday.

This will take place across the MISU Instagram account on Wednesday, here you will be able to get a brief intro to the candidates and see what they will do for you, if elected. They will be mainly answering YOUR questions (submitted over the weekend via social media), so make sure to stay tuned before you decide how to use your vote on Thursday.

Yes, voting will be open to all MIC Students. Our online system is fast and effective so it will only take 2 minutes out of your day.

How will I decide to who I should give my VOTE?
We encourage all MIC Students to read Candidate Manifestos carefully, we also encourage students to put forward questions at the Candidate Q&A, this is where you can ask questions that may not be answered in their Manifestos.
Voting in the Student Officer Elections is done through an online system and is in the format of a 'Single Transferable Vote'.
How does the counting of the votes work, and can I watch it?
The counting of the votes will take place online at 6:30 pm on Thursday, 7th March via Zoom. We will email you a link if you wish to join and view it, alternatively, you will be able to watch a recording of it afterwards and the results will be puslished here and on our social media platforms.
If you decide to run for a position, you have the exciting opportunity to create your election campaign (and no we don't mean knocking on people's doors) this is mainly a social and on-campus campaign only.
Rally your friends and come up with your campaign idea. It is important to make it KNOWN to other students (especially in other courses and on other campuses) that you are running for a position in the election. Make use of the campus and social media to spread your manifesto and what you will do for them if they elect you. This is probably the most exciting part of the election, as you can have some fun, get your friends together, and create an atmosphere (and some friendly competition) with the other candidates!
- Posters are allowed only in designated areas,
- A spending cap of €250 applies to promotional materials
- Candidates must retain receipts and present them if requested by the Returning Officer;
- MISU does not reimburse election expenses.
- Executive Committee members must maintain autonomy, stay impartial, and not use their current position for campaigning.
- Violations may lead to Disciplinary Committee involvement.
- Executive Committee members running for election cannot use MISU facilities, software, branded items, or contacts for campaigning.
- Failure results in immediate disqualification. Canvassing is permitted within college grounds; any breach incurs sanctions.
- Pre-defined exclusion areas exist around physical polling stations during elections, with sanctions for violations.
