Week 1 of the college year, MISU will advertise activities and events for Freshers’ Week so keep an eye on our social media, for posters on campus and your student email to know what’s going on and what MISU has to offer. Clubs & Socs sign up takes place during the week, giving new students a chance to meet members of active Clubs and Societies and find out what they do throughout the year. You will also find out how to start a society from our Clubs & Socs Co-Ordinator, Dave and the Societies Officers, Kalina and Elanor.
This is an important week to get your bearings in Mary I. Although this week is associated with a nights out, events and socialising, it is important to also attend lectures, as course outlines will be given, and deadlines for assignments and in class exams will be explained and set out. This is often where you will meet close friends that you'll have for the rest of your life. Arrive early to make sure you are on time, as finding lecture halls can be tricky. If you need any directions or don’t know what class you’re in, ask us in the office or a Sabbat or Executive Officer.
For those of you that are going out in Freshers’ Week, be aware of your surroundings and have a plan. It is always better to go out in groups. Don’t leave your drink down if can’t see it. Also, have a plan of how you will get home, and don’t walk! Use the Free Now app, or call Swift taxis on (061 313131), or in Thurles, call Abbey Cabs on (087) 2522559.
It is important to know your own limits, and don’t overdo it. It is not mandatory to go out. Do what is best for you. If you are out, don’t drink excessively. It may seem like freedom, but you are still students, and you have to work out a balance that works for you.
For many, settling into new accommodation is done this week too. Get to know your housemates and try organise things together. The more inclusive you are, the easier it will be to live together.
